I bet you’ve been eyeing that growing “natural” section at your grocery store and wondering if it’s worth the price, or, maybe you’re already breaking the bank trying to make sure all of your produce is organic. But why are people choosing organic over non-organic, or conventional, foods?

Let’s break down some reasons and look at why it’s still okay to feed yourself conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.
I don’t want to eat Pesticides
Avoiding excess chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers is the biggest reason that people choose organic food.
Yes, the USDA standard for organic food bans the use of synthetic pesticides, but most people don’t realize that organic farmers still use pesticides freely!
These pesticides are allowed as long as they’re considered natural.
Unfortunately, just like with synthetic pesticides there isn’t any testing done to prove the long-term safety of these chemicals. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.
Tobacco and alcohol are natural but toxic to the body, and chemicals like cyanide and carbon monoxide are downright deadly. Don’t break the bank buying organically labeled foods.
The best way to avoid excess chemicals is by cleaning your produce thoroughly before eating. And you can forget the soap or fancy washes, multiple studies have shown that plain water or diluted vinegar is as good or better at removing bacteria and pesticides.
I need to avoid GMOs
Another popular reason people choose organic food is to avoid GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. Because the USDA organic certification prohibits GMOs, any organic products will be GMO free.
The good news is that most GMOs actually find their way into our food supply through processed foods AKA the junk food you should be avoiding anyway.
Most fresh fruits and vegetables are non-GMO. Some common fresh fruits and vegetables like apples, corn, potatoes, papaya, zucchini, and summer squash may contain GMOs, but the rest don’t.
If you’re actively trying to avoid GMOs, you can buy organic versions of those foods, but don’t bother splurging on your other produce picks.
Is Organic Food Better?
Some people believe that organic fruits and vegetables have more nutrients in them.
This simply isn’t true. Study after study has shown no difference in the vitamin and mineral levels of organic and non-organic produce.
There are good reasons why people opt for organic over conventional, such as farming methods that may promote sustainability, but in the end, the choice is personal.
Don’t let the fear of non-organic food prevent you from eating healthy or make you buy things you can’t afford. Anyone that chooses to eat fresh fruits and vegetables daily is already doing better than most.
